This is a brilliant free service provided by Google that gives you detailed statistics about visitors to your blog. Not only does it track your visitors, it can help show you if your Adword advertising campaigns are working too. If you’re using WordPress like me, you can set up this service very easily.

This is a brilliant free service provided by Google that gives you detailed statistics about visitors to your blog. Not only does it track your visitors, it can help show you if your Adword advertising campaigns are working too. If you’re using WordPress like me, you can set up this service very easily.

Go to this site and download the latest Analytics WordPress plugin.

Upload the ”gapp” folder to your WordPress plugin area on your server. Directory: /wp-content/plugins/

Now you need to head over to the Google Analytics website and create an account if you don’t already have a Google account. Once logged into your account click Sign Up underneath Sign Up for Google Analytics and enter all of the details Google asks for.

Once all of your personal details have been entered correctly you should be taken to the Analytics: Tracking Instructions area.

Once there open a new browser and go to your WordPress Admin area. Click on Plugins in the top menu. If you uploaded the Analytics plugin correctly you should see the plugin Google Analytics for WordPress. Activate it.

Just above Plugin Management in the plugin area you should now see the Google Analytics link. If it’s not there refresh your browser. Click the link and you should be taken to the plugin configuration area.

You now need to switch back to the Google Analytics page. On the Analytics: Tracking Instructions page you should see an area containing code similar to this.

src=”http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js”

type=”text/javascript”>
_uacct =
“UA-3655143-1″;
urchinTracker();

Copy the code and paste it in to notepad. Now you need to highlight the following piece of code and copy it. UA-3655143-1.
The numbers in your code will be different because it’s your own personal tracking I.D.

With the code copied, switch back to your WordPress area and paste your tracking I.D in to the Analytics User Account field. Scroll down to the bottom, click update and your site will now be tracked by Google.

To check this. Head back to your Analytics page and you should see the following message:

Waiting for data: yourdomain.com
Analytics has been successfully installed and data is being gathered now.

So today I’m starting a campaign to drive traffic to my site. The first way I’ve discovered is by using a site called Entrecard. Basically you pay for advertising space on other Entrecard users sites with entrecard credits. With so many sites using Entrecard it’s a great way to give yourself some free exposure. And as my blog is new and not generating any profit, free is good.
